IAEA Board of Governors: Statement by Denmark

Vienna, 2 March 2022

Statement by Denmark

Agenda item 1: The safety, security and safeguards implications of the situation in Ukraine

1. Denmark aligns itself with the statement delivered by France on behalf of the European Union. In light of the grave situation caused by Russia’s unjustified military aggression against Ukraine in flagrant violation of international law, which we condemn in the strongest possible terms, it is important to my government to add its voice today.

2. We extend our full support to and solidarity with Ukraine. Speaking in the IAEA Board, we underline our admiration for Ukraine’s continued efforts, even under these extreme conditions, to ensure the safety and security of its nuclear power plants and other nuclear and radiological facilities and material and our gratitude for the continuing information provided.

3. We are very concerned by the potential nuclear-related consequences of the Russian aggression for human health and the environment. We reiterate the urgent call to cease all unlawful activities in order to ensure the control by the Ukrainian authorities over all nuclear facilities and materials within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.

4. We thank the Agency for its efforts to closely monitor developments in Ukraine, with a special focus on the safety and security of its nuclear power reactors. We would support the Director General in intensifying to the extent possible the Agency’s work to ensure the highest standards of nuclear safety, security and safeguards in Ukraine. We support the draft resolution before the Board.

5. I cannot but end by repeating our insistent call on Russia to immediately cease the hostilities, withdraw its military from Ukraine and fully respect Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence within its internationally recognised borders.
