IAEA Board of Governors
AGENDA ITEM: SAFETY, SECURITY AND SAFEGUARDS IN UKRAINE
Vienna, 30 January 2026
Statement by Denmark
Thank you Chair,
- Denmark fully aligns itself with the statement delivered earlier by Cyprus on behalf of the EU.
- We thank the Director General for his latest update on developments in Ukraine as well as the Agency’s important work in the country. This includes presence at all Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, including the ZNPP, the Agency’s visits to substations critical for nuclear power plants and repeated efforts to repair power lines destroyed as a result of Russia’s war of aggression.
Chair,
- While talks to bring peace to Ukraine continue, Russia has again chosen to intensify its brutal war, putting nuclear safety and security at great risk, and leaving Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winter. Given the serious implications for nuclear safety, this is a matter of direct relevance for the IAEA and the Board. We therefore support the holding of today’s meeting.
- Denmark continues to condemn these shocking Russian attacks. We recall that intentionally directing attacks against civilians is a serious violation of International Humanitarian Law and constitutes a war crime.
Mr Chair,
- It is clear that the first step forward must be an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire. This is exactly what Ukraine has been offering for almost a year now.
- I would, in closing, like to underline my country’s full and unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders and for a just and lasting peace.
I thank you.
