Agenda item 6: Verification and monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015)
Statement by denmark
Thank you Chair,
1. Denmark fully aligns itself with the EU statement delivered earlier.
2. The report before us is very alarming. It shows that Iran’s production of highly enriched uranium has reached an unprecedented rate, and that Iran is continuing to expand its enrichment capacity. And yet there is no plausible civilian reason for Iran’s production and stockpiling of enriched uranium.
3. At the same time, the Agency’s JCPoA-related monitoring and verification has been interrupted for four years now. As the IAEA points out, Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon State that is producing and stockpiling highly enriched uranium. This makes it all the more crucial for Iran to allow the Agency to fully implement its mandate. In this context, we share the Director General’s deep regret that Iran has not accepted the designation of four additional experienced inspectors.
Chair
4. Denmark supports efforts at finding a diplomatic solution to this matter. We urge Iran to reverse the escalation of its nuclear activities in order to create conditions conducive to such a solution.
Chair
5. Denmark fully supports the work of the IAEA and its professional and dedicated inspectors. We look forward to the Director General’s continued, detailed reporting, and we urge Iran to cooperate fully with the IAEA, including by implementing the legally binding Code 3.1. and the Additional Protocol.
Thank you, Chair
