Remarks delivered by Denmark at the IAEA Board of Governors 2021

Agenda item 5: Verification and monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015)

IAEA Board of Governors

Vienna, 13-17 September 2021

Statement by Denmark

Madam Chair

Denmark aligns itself with the EU statement delivered earlier.

We continue to support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA). We remain in favour of preserving this key multilateral agreement because it has clear non-proliferation benefits if fully implemented.

For this reason, we are deeply concerned by Iran’s significant and escalating proliferation-sensitive nuclear activities in violation of the JCPoA as well as by its decision to stop the implementation of commitments related to IAEA access and oversight. These developments have, at a critical time, put the proliferation benefits as well as the IAEA’s effective monitoring and verification at severe risk, as the report clearly demonstrates. We urge Iran to resume full implementation of the agreement, including all transparency measures, among which is the Additional Protocol.

We thank the Director General and the Agency for their commendable efforts to find an interim solution to mitigate the impact of these Iranian decisions and ensure the ability to recover the necessary continuity of knowledge. In that regard we welcome the most recent agreement giving the IAEA access to service its equipment and replace storage media and hope that it will be put into practise in the very near future.

Madam Chair

We support all efforts aimed at restoring full implementation of the JCPoA. We were encouraged by the Vienna negotiations in this regard and strongly hope that they will resume soon. We call on Iran to return to the negotiations with a view to bringing them to a swift, successful conclusion.

We attach key importance to the IAEA’s verification and monitoring of the JCPoA and have provided financial support for it. We look forward to the IAEA’s continued detailed reporting. These reports, based on the IAEA’s full  and unhindered verification and monitoring, are crucial to provide the international community with assurances of the exclusively peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear programme.

Thank you, Madam Chair
