The Embassy & Permanent Mission of Denmark in Vienna is looking for a dynamic, dedicated full-time academic staff member to join our multilateral team for 10 months while a colleague is on maternity leave.

The Danish Embassy and Permanent Mission is located in the heart of Vienna and includes a bilateral section, representing our interests in Austria as well as in Albania, Slovakia, and Kosovo, and a multilateral section, representing Denmark in the UN and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). You will join the multilateral section’s OSCE team, consisting of four staff members and one intern, working to represent Danish priorities within the OSCE.

We are looking for a proactive and positive colleague, who is results-oriented, professional, self-motivated and able to perform independently in a dynamic working environment, where we continuously strive to support each other, work smarter and have fun.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Your main responsibility will be to represent Denmark and promote Danish interests in the OSCE’s human dimension, focusing on human rights and democracy. You will lead on our priorities related to Ukraine, torture prevention, and human rights defenders, and act as penholder for the EU’s statements on combating torture and on human rights defenders. You will be independently responsible for the day-to-day engagement of Denmark in the third dimension of the OSCE, reporting the Deputy Head of Mission and the ambassador.

Typical tasks include:

  • Covering and reporting from formal and informal meetings within the OSCE’s third dimension, as well as weekly meetings in the Permanent Council.
  • Following and analysing the development on human rights and democracy in the OSCE region as well as the work of the OSCE’s independent institutions, including on elections, democracy promotion, and media freedom.
  • Engaging with established informal networks related to the OSCE’s human dimension and participating in discussions among OSCE participating States in these areas.
  • Working proactively to promote and raise the profile of Danish priorities in the 3rd dimension, including torture prevention, Belarus, Georgia and election monitoring.
  • Working together with civil society actors working to promote democracy and human rights.
  • Maintaining regular contact to the relevant colleagues in the Foreign Ministry in Copenhagen to inform them of relevant developments and seeking instructions and guidance when required.

We value teamwork and flexibility. You will on occasion be expected to support colleagues across the Embassy’s portfolio and step in beyond your own immediate area of responsibility when needed.

Requirements for the position:

  • University degree in political science, international politics, international relations, security politics, Human Rights or a similar field.
  • Experience/knowledge in the fields of multilateral diplomacy, Human Rights and the OSCE region will be an advantage.
  • High degree of personal drive and self-motivation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams.
  • Ability to foster and maintain networks in your field.
  • A developed sense of responsibility and ability to plan and prioritize tasks.
  • High proficiency in English – both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in Danish/Scandinavian is a clear advantage.

    Employment conditions

  • You will be offered full-time employment for 10 months on a local contract based on the relevant labour market rules of Austria and the Embassy’s staff rules.
  • Your standard working hours will be 40 hours per week.
  • You will be entitled to five weeks (25 working days) of paid holiday per year.
  • Your salary will reflect your qualifications, experience and proven work-related results.
