The 2019 OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting provides a unique platform for hundreds of civil society representatives, international organizations and government officials from the region to engage in a dialogue on how to advance human rights and fundamental freedoms. Throughout the first week of the meeting, Denmark has put the spotlight on fundamental democratic principles, safety of journalists and the human rights violations in Chechnya.

At the fourth annual Democracy Defender Initiative workshop, participants examined contemporary challenges to the freedom of peaceful assembly. The workshop featured expert introducers, including Director of Amnesty International UK, Kate Allen, and Daniel Ioannisyan, Founder and Director of Union of Informed Citizens in Armenia.

In the framework of the informal OSCE Group of Friend on Safety of Journalists, an expert panel discussed “How to Build Digital Safety for Journalism”, with specific emphasis on sharing best practices and practical recommendations for further action. This was followed by a joint statement delivered by Denmark on the importance of promoting free, diverse and independent media as a cornerstone of democratic societies and an essential part of the OSCE’s comprehensive approach to security.

Finally, Denmark and 15 OSCE countries organized a panel debate on “Fighting Impunity for Human Rights Violations and Abused in Chechya (Russia)”, following up on the recent report under the OSCE Moscow Mechanism. The discussion was introduced by an expert panel, including Tanya Lokshina, Associate Director Europe and Central Asia Division at Human Rights Watch, Prof. Wolfgang Benedek, OSCE Moscow Mechanism Rapporteur, Igor Kochetkov, Founder and Director of Russian LGBT Network, Oleg Orlov, Head of the North Caucasus Programme at the Human Rights Centre Memorial and Gerald Staberock, Secretary General of the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT).

Stay tuned for next week’s activities.
